Computer games don't affect kids.  I mean if computer games had affected us as kids, we would all be running around in a darkened room, munching pills and listen to repetitive music.

Ik snap het neutral hoe kan je computer dan stuk gaan? Dat UEFI er voor zorgt dat je geen Linux kan installeren is balen icon_evil maar dat het plaatsen van een linux CD je moederbord sloopt is toch raar mad . Kan iemand mij uitleggen hoe UEFI werkt en waarom je moederbord stug gaat.

Ik dacht dat UEFI een nieuw soort bios was met als extra dat je lastiger wat anders dan windows op je PC kan zetten. Maar als UEFI totaal is ingevoerd (dus BIOS niet meer bestaat) LINUX ook over is, tenzij er echt wat gaat veranderen.
Ligt het probleem eigenlijk bij UEFI of loopt LINUX een beetje achter en is het een kwestie van tijd?

UEFI is geen Secure boot.

Secure boot maakt gebruik van UEFI

UEFI zorgt er niet voor dat je geen Linux kunt installeren

Het plaatsen van een Linux cd sloopt je moederbord niet. Het booten van een Linux USB UEFI installatie media *kan* je moederbord slopen

Redhat heeft jaren geleden van 1 van mijn all-in-one printers (uiteraard de duurste...) een kasplantje gemaakt.
Nou ja gedeeltelijk dan, want hij was wel nog als kopieer apparaat te gebruiken, maar wenste niet meer normaal met welke pc dan ook te communiceren.
Gelukkig niet veel voorkomend, maar het is dus niet een nieuw iets.

Ik kwam het volgende tegen op phonorix:

Three PC Brands Where SecureBoot On Linux Is Botched

Matthew Garrett has written a new article summarizing the state of UEFI/SecureBoot on Linux. Overall, the situation isn't good if you're using hardware from one of three major vendors.

Aside from the Linux UEFI issue that can brick Samsung laptops (well, he does go over that issue in greater detail and there's now a workaround in the mainline kernel), Garrett's post also points out issues for Toshiba and Lenovo hardware too.

Matthew Garrett says some Toshiba PCs won't boot Linux since they managed to leave the signing key out of the database used to validate binaries as well as the signature database signing key used for whitelist/blacklist updates. This fortunately is in violation of Microsoft's Windows 8 certification guidelines so an updated UEFI/BIOS will likely be issued for the affected hardware by Toshiba.

Some Lenovo PCs will only boot Windows or Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This situation is more concerning and Matthew just says, "I recommend drinking, because as far as I know they haven't actually got around to doing anything useful about this yet."

Aside from the Toshiba, Samsung, and Lenovo problems, UEFI/SecureBoot isn't doing too bad on Linux at the moment. Read more details in Matthew's blog post.

Ik kan me niet aan de indruk onttrekken, dat M$ precies krijgt waar ze op hoopten.
Een extra hindernis, om Linux te gebruiken.

Zouden we het gedeelte over UEFI kunnen afsplitsen in een apart topic? [mods?] Ik vind het een heel belangrijk onderwerp en is hier lastig terug te vinden tussen de 800+ replies. En het is off topic.

P.S. Ik lees dit topic ook nooit, vandaar dat ik deze (belangrijke) discussie bijna gemist had.

Als je voor een verdieping niet de diepte in moet, maar de hoogte, waarom heet het dan ....

Goed idee de reacties op secure boot staan nu al in meerdere topics.

Ook Windows struikelt over UEFI-bootfout Samsung

Samsungs implementatie van BIOS-opvolger UEFI levert niet alleen Linux problemen op. Ook met Windows kan een Samsung-notebook worden gebrickt.

De aanvankelijke diagnose van het UEFI-bootprobleem blijkt dus niet geheel correct te zijn. Installatie van Linux op Samsung-laptops met UEFI brengt het gevaar met zich dat die pc's volledig om zeep worden geholpen. Booten met het open source-besturingssysteem zorgt voor corruptie van de UEFI-firmware waardoor het moederbord moet worden vervangen.
'Nooit Linux geboot'

Samsung wijt dit probleem aan zijn kerneldriver voor Linux, maar die conclusie lijkt nu voorbarig. Ook gebruik van Windows kan namelijk leiden tot het bricken van een UEFI-laptop van de Zuid-Koreaanse fabrikant. "Ik heb vandaag een Samsung-laptop gebrickt. In tegenstelling tot de meeste gemelde gevallen van Samsung-laptops die weigeren te booten, heb ik er nooit Linux op geboot", meldt Linux-ontwikkelaar Matthew Garrett.

"Al het ge-experimenteer is gedaan onder Windows. Het lijkt erop dat de bug die we hebben gezien tegelijkertijd simpeler en complexer is dan we voorheen hebben gerealiseerd." Garrett geeft aan dat de inmiddels doorgevoerde patch om Samsungs driver uit te schakelen op UEFI-systemen niet helpt. "Het vermijdt slechts de makkelijkste manier om het [probleem - red.] te activeren."
